The world's largest Swiss watchmaker will be bringing what it describes as a set of "useful features" focused on health and fitness tracking to its Touch line of digital watches next year.

Of course, shipments are not the same as sales but there is no denying that the buzz around the devices is starting to grow.

And, if the rumors turn out to be true and Apple does launch a truly premium 'iWatch' before the end of 2014 this buzz is going to hit a crescendo.

Before the iPhone, the complicated smartphone was a business tool, not an object of consumer desire, and many are hoping that an Apple-branded smartwatch will legitimize what is currently seen as a gimmicky gadget and elevate it into something that appeals to the fashion conscious as well as the tech- or health-obsessed.

The Wall Street Journal suggests that this is the driving force behind Swatch's decision to embrace wearables.
